Why Candle Ingredients Matter
First things first, did you know that some candles can be toxic?! Not Overflow candles thankfully (more on that later), but many popular candles do contain ingredients that are not safe for your home and other enclosed spaces.
Yet, before you can remove those toxins from your living quarters, you need to know what to look for. Don’t worry, I’ve got you!
Let’s start by noting that there are four materials that make up the candles you use: the container or jar it comes in; the wick used to ignite a flame; the fragrance oil(s) used for the scent throw, and most importantly, the wax.
Jars are neither here nor there, but surprisingly enough wicks can pose a problem. Some wicks are reported to have wire in them — can you imagine burning that in your living room?! Studies show that these metal wicks can negatively effect your immune, reproductive and neurological systems. Yikes! Thankfully, bans have cracked down on such hazardous materials; nevertheless, be sure to look for one of the following to ensure safe burning: cotton core, hemp or wood.
Next, the number #1 rule for fragrance: Buy natural. Some synthetic chemicals found in fragrances are derived from petrochemicals (petroleum-based) and can be harmful for human and pet health, particularly when it comes to breathing. The chemicals you want to avoid? Phthalates (which are endocrine disruptors) and benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and toluene (all known carcinogens).
