Our Story

Hello, I’m Denise. Among other wonderful things, I love my husband, our cats, a good dinner party. And now, I love to make candles.

Candle-making found me at time where I couldn’t have needed it more. Reeling from personal trauma, a loss of purpose and “Covid fatigue,” I was attempting new project after new project in the hopes that something would stick. Yet, I was looking for more than a quarantine hobby — I was looking for a chance to be creative and to forge a path forward.

In between all of my lists and ‘best laid plans,’ I randomly blurted out one day: “CANDLES! I think I should make candles.” Sure, that might sound silly … but after more than 30 years of living, I’ve found that the best ideas are the ones that come to me erratically instead of the ones I overthink. Candles, it was.

Over time, Overflow Candle Co. got its name because it reminds me that even when the chips are down, I can still operate out of a place of wealth instead of a place of fear. It reminds me that in a time that felt difficult, I chose to lean into abundance.

Personally, I find that while candles may not make up my entire self-care routine, they have played a significant part in moments throughout my life. They have attached themselves to sentiments of “be still.” The smell of grapefruit & fir is burned into my brain as the scent that will calmly kick off my day. I can recall at a moment’s notice the smell that wafts through the entry of our first home. And those are the moments that make my heart overflow.
